FAQ

01.

What are the pros and cons of solar panels?

Pros:

Renewable, carbon-free energy source.

Reduces reliance on the electric grid.

Lower costs over time thanks to federal/state incentives and declining installation costs.

Can reduce electricity bills or create new revenue streams.

Electricity rates generally rise with inflation, so the long-term value of solar increases.

Panels have no moving parts, making them simple and inexpensive to maintain.

Cons:

Upfront installation is still costly, usually requiring incentives to be cost-effective.

Panels are relatively space-inefficient and may require large roof areas.

Any rooftop installation comes with some risk.

Solar only produces electricity when the sun shines.

02.

If I wait could the cost of solar go down?

Not necessarily. While solar costs declined for many years, both hardware and installation costs have risen recently. Prices may drop again, but not enough to justify delaying a project—especially since utility rates continue to climb.

Advances in solar cell technology are now mostly incremental, meaning future efficiency improvements will be modest and unlikely to significantly change project economics.

03.

Does solar increase property value?

Yes. According to studies from the U.S. Department of Energy, homes with solar often sell at a premium. Buyers understand the value of lower utility costs and the environmental benefits solar provides.

04.

How can one take advantage of the financial benefits of solar PV?

Solar PV (photovoltaics) refers to technology that converts sunlight directly into electricity. Property owners can capture financial benefits from solar PV in three main ways:

1. Direct Purchase: Buy and install the system on your facility. The solar power offsets the electricity you would otherwise buy from the grid.

2. Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): A developer like Skyview pays for the equipment, installation, and ongoing operations. You agree to purchase the power generated at a lower, fixed rate than your utility.

3. Roof Lease: Rent your rooftop to a developer. They install the system, export power to the grid, and you earn lease income.

05.

What happens if I sell my property?

If you sell your property, the solar agreement is written so it can be transferred to the new owner. This process, called an assignment, ensures the system and its benefits continue without interruption.

06.

Will solar impact my roof or roof warranty?

Your roof warranty will remain protected. Any roof work needed for the solar system, such as flashing around penetrations, is done by the original roofing contractor or a contractor certified by the roof material manufacturer. We also work with the roofing contractor and warranty provider to secure a “roof overburden waiver,” which ensures the warranty stays valid after solar is installed. If the solar installation does cause any roof damage, the responsibility for repairs falls on the solar provider or its contractors—not you.
